Three Is A Crowd

Kai has, for the last few months, been consistently getting into bed with Ade & me at some point in the night.  He is not a fun person to sleep with in many regards.  It is very common to find the boy’s feet on the pillow instead of where they ought to be, under the covers.  He sometimes snores, which would be tolerable if only he would do it while he is upside down in the bed, but it’s usually when he has managed to plant his face directly beside my own.  He will also get irritated, in his sleep mind you, with the way the blankets are arranged and fuss aloud about it.

“Uuuuh.”  Over and over.

So pretty much the nights go like this: Kick. Jab. “Uuuuh.” Jab, jab, jab.  “Uuuuh.” Snore.

Then something unusual happened.  Ade woke one morning to find Kai had brought a “comfort item” into our bed with him.  Not a sweet little teddy bear or a well-loved blankie.  Our son brought a broomstick into bed with us, minus the bristley end.  Just the stick.

I think it says something about how accustomed Ade and I have become to rather uncomfortable sleeping conditions when we don’t even notice there’s a broomstick in our bed until morning.

PS - I have to confess that, while it is often extremely irritating to sleep with Kai, it is also true that nothing beats cuddling up to your peacefully sleeping child.
